We started the day off with a small gap-down and market breadth of about 3 to 1 negative. The bears had an opportunity to gain some ground as the small-caps underperformed once again. Instead, we saw the bulls fight back on low volume. While it was unimpressive for the bulls, it was still a win as we continue to test June’s highs and continue to stay above the 200-day moving average in the S&P 500. (more…)

We had another green day in the markets today. Technically, the S&P 500 closed slightly red, but the last minute surge put the the Dow Jones and Nasdaq in the green. After dropping at the open, we worked our way higher towards lunchtime. Near the middle of the day, we started to downtrend into the final hour. The final hour is typically met with high frequency traders taking over and creating volatile action. Today was surely no different. (more…)

I wish I could start this off by saying how great today’s action was however I found it to be one of the most boring trading days of the year. Granted, we saw a nice run-up in Orient Paper (ONP), to which I booked some profits, but the volume was light and the action mostly sideways. As I’ve stated often, it is very hard to capitalize on low volume days with sideways action. It is much better to have a high emotion day where the market goes up or down on good volume, as we can make money in either direction. (more…)

Finally! The bulls have finally managed to do something right. We received our bounce today and it was a nice run-up into the close. The bulls managed to force shorts to cover, which helped fuel some of the gains for the day. Breaking resistance around the 1040 mark in the S&P 500 was an important positive and if we can hold this level tomorrow, we could see us breaking past more resistance which will hopefully turn this bounce into a rally. (more…)

Today started very promising. The bulls started early and we had a strong gap-up to open. Early volume had the stocks moving north but this was very brief before the selling started and the bulls moved to the sidelines. (more…)

Good evening everyone. Hope you had a safe weekend and are well rested for the shortened trading week. We find ourselves opening the week from a long downtrend that continued all of last week. Every day last week was lower than the previous. This is not a good sign at all. (more…)

Good evening traders/investors. We had a very nice end to last week with the Russell rebalancing bringing significant volume and positive momentum to the market, only to have a very boring and unemotional Monday. The week saw a downtrend in the general markets only to find some much needed support, lately. The big question is can the bulls gain some traction, now that the Russell rebalancing volume is no longer helping, or will the bears gain control and move us down another leg. I have mixed emotions on this and will attempt to explain in more depth, before I jump into the requested chart analysis for Monday. (more…)

Good evening. Just a brief update tonight. We have been drifting aimlessly as a market the past few days. This type of action is very frustrating as it is hard to be bullish or bearish and move with the trend. At least when we know the direction we are going, we can make money or protect capital. This type of action makes it very hard to stay awake, let alone make money. (more…)

Good evening and Happy Fathers Day. Below, are some of the most requested charts over the past week with some general market analysis to digest. Despite the alarmingly low volume in the markets, which is not giving confidence to many, the market has created some very nice chart setups and has a slightly bullish sentiment. After we moved above 1108 in the S&P 500, we have seen consolidation, which has been the reason for such attractive chart setups. My favorite stocks to watch this week are the ones with bullish Russell rebalancing news coming out. Due to the very low volume in the market, the best breakouts are happening in the sectors that find themselves in the headlines often. This includes Energy and Gold/Silver. This has made the combination of strong chart setups and anticipated bullish news to be much more pertinent to finding high volume breakouts. The Russell rebalancing news should be very helpful in finding the short-term volume strength that we need to profit from. Keep your eyes on the S&P 500, 1108 level. If we break support there, we could see weakness develop in the charts. (more…)
